Who gets psoriasis?
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, about 7.5 million people in the United States have psoriasis. Studies indicate psoriasis does not discriminate based on age or gender, so if you suffer from the uncomfortable condition, you’re not alone. Rest assured, our dermatologists are here to help.
What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a systemic inflammatory disorder which often affects the skin. Psoriasis causes itchy or sore patches of thick red skin with silvery scales. Patches usually develop on the elbows, knees, scalp, back, face, palms or feet, but can show up on other parts of the body. Psoriasis is a chronic disease with no known cure; however, with treatment that manages its symptoms, it can be put into prolonged remission.
What causes psoriasis?
Psoriasis is caused by an overactive immune system and is thought to be a genetic disease that is triggered by environmental factors. In a process called cell turnover, skin cells that grow deep in the skin rise to the surface. Normally this process takes about a month, but in people with psoriasis it happens in days because the cells rise too fast.
How is psoriasis treated?
There are several methods used to treat psoriasis including laser or phototherapy, which can be used in combination with systemic therapy (prescription oral or injected drugs) as well as prescription topical creams.Book an appointment now
- Topical agents: corticosteroids, vitamin D, salicylic acid, coconut oil
- Light exposure: phototherapy uses a UV light to treat the symptoms of psoriasis
- Systemic agents: oral and injectable medications may help people who are resistant to other treatments
How long does it take to treat?
There is no cure for psoriasis, but treatment can help reduce symptoms and the condition can go into remission. There is a range of different types of psoriasis, so treatment strategies and lengths can vary from weeks to years with most people needing long term treatment.
- Frequency: 2-3 treatments per week
- Duration: 4-6 weeks
