Skin Texture & Scarring

You can be consistent and conscientious in your skin care regimen and still feel like you’re fighting a losing battle with acne scarring, pockmarks, post-surgical scars and other imperfections you simply can’t control. Technology comes to the rescue with the Sona solution for smoother skin and a clearer complexion. We have the technology to treat a variety of scars, with the exception of more serious and complex conditions such as raised scars and keloid scars.

Skin Resurfacing with the Pixel Laser

Skin resurfacing is a procedure to smooth your skin, repairing dullness and damage from acne scarring, general aging or other causes. The Pixel laser provides highly effective resurfacing and minimal physical or social down time. Unlike other skin resurfacing technologies, only a portion of the skin is treated while leaving the surrounding tissue intact. Because the surrounding skin is left untouched, it heals much faster and down time is minimal. This treatment method also encourages collagen remodeling, skin tightening and improvement in skin texture.

Why is this preferable to more traditional laser technology such as the Fraxel CO2? While the Pixel laser is ablative, meaning that it uses an intense wavelength of light to penetrate problem areas of the skin, it is far less severe in its heat distribution than CO2 lasers, therefore it provides a gentler experience, causes fewer temporary side effects and allows for more rapid healing.

With the Pixel laser, Sona’s medical staff has the ability to personalize each treatment. A technique called “stacking” is utilized to focus on certain areas that may require targeted or additional correction to achieve the best results. It takes experience and sound judgment to deliver this level of treatment, and our providers are highly qualified to address each client’s unique concerns.

What types of scars do we treat?

Sona offers the expertise and advanced technology to treat the most common scarring conditions, with procedures that smooth the skin and remove the most visible signs of acne scars, pockmarks and post-surgical scars.

  • 01 / Acne Scars

Common in adolescence, acne can leave permanent effects when the condition causes inflammation and indentations on the face, resulting in unsightly scars as well as bumps that look similar to chicken pox.
  • 02 / Pockmarks

Pockmarks are among the most common conditions caused by acne scarring, and are distinguished by deep pits on the cheeks, forehead and other areas of the face and body.
  • 03 / Post-surgical Scars

Whether it’s for a tummy tuck, breast augmentation or knee surgery, even the most effective surgical procedures can often leave scars.

Why Choose Pixel Laser

Fraxel Erbium CO2

Pixel Laser vs. Fraxel

The Pixel is an Erbium laser, which was the first type of laser developed and has a longer history of efficacy than the Fraxel, another common laser treatment. The Pixel utilizes a technique called “stacking” that allows for more targeted and aggressive treatment of specific areas of the face and body. Less heat is introduced in comparison to the Fraxel CO2 laser, which gives you less risk, fewer temporary side effects and less social down time.

Pixel Laser vs. Erbium

Not all Erbium lasers are created equal. It’s important to find the specific laser that causes the least amount of stress to your skin. Sona is proud to use the Pixel laser, which builds on the advances in erbium technology to use less heat while still providing targeted and aggressive treatment.

Pixel Laser vs. CO2

The CO2 laser is commonly used to treat skin conditions, but it can cause discomfort due to the high degree of heat generated. This laser also lacks the precision of the Pixel laser, therefore it is not as effective in targeting and treating specific problem areas.

What type of laser technology is used?

Pixel Laser

Laser skin resurfacing with the Pixel provides a deep exfoliation of dry, damaged skin. At the same time is stimulates the skin to rebuild and product its own collagen. This method of fractional resurfacing pokes small but deep holes in the skin while leaving a certain amount of the skin completely untouched, helping you heal much faster with minimal side effects. This procedure can be used to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, decrease wrinkles, minimize acne scarring, improve skin texture, shrink pores and tighten skin.

How does it compare to other lasers?

Fraxel Image

The Pixel allows for more targeted and aggressive treatment of specific areas of the face and body. Less heat is introduced in comparison to the Fraxel CO2 laser, which gives you less risk, fewer temporary side effects and less social downtime.

Erbium Image

Not all Erbium lasers are created equal. It’s important to find the specific laser that causes the least amount of stress to your skin. The Pixel laser builds on the advances in erbium technology to use less heat while still providing targeted and aggressive treatment.

CO2 Laser Image

The CO2 laser is commonly used to treat skin conditions, but it can cause discomfort due to the high degree of heat generated. This laser also lacks the precision of the Pixel laser, and is not as effective in targeting and treating specific problem areas.

What to expect on the day of your treatment.

Sona works with you at every stage of your treatment to ensure your experience is as pleasant and comfortable as it can be. Here are some of the things you should know about your schedule on your treatment day.

A treatment room
  • Arrive at the center for your appointment and check in.
  • A nurse will escort you to the treatment room.
  • If treating the face, the nurse will remove your makeup (if you haven’t already done so).
  • While you wear protective eyewear, the nurse will treat the designated area with the Pixel hand piece.
  • After the treatment is completed, post-laser ointment will be applied and the nurse will review post-treatment instructions with you.
  • Check out and schedule your next appointment.
  • You may experience a feeling of warmth for a few hours after treatment.
  • Your skin may look red, like it has a sunburn, and feel tight.
  • You can begin wearing makeup as soon as the next day.

What to expect: Physical and social down time.

Physical down time is typically associated with surgery, where you have to rest after a procedure and you can’t go about your daily life until a period of healing has occurred. A big advantage of the Pixel procedure is there is no physical down time.

Social down time refers to the recovery time you need to feel more comfortable with your appearance, although you aren’t physically restricted from doing any of your typical daily tasks. Treatment with the Pixel laser leaves the skin feeling tight and temporarily looking red, as with a sunburn, and its appearance could raise few questions from coworkers – so you may want to consider waiting a couple of days to return to work.
